Prawn Sandwich Popularity
Prawn is the best selling sandwich for both M&S and Waitrose. M&S sells 6.5 million a year. In fact, according to research by M&S, it’s the nation’s favourite sandwich overall – and has been since records began.
The same research also found that nearly half of all customers eat the same lunch every day. That’s a lot of prawns!
What’s more, 1 in 4 sandwiches sold in Devon and Cornwall are prawn mayonnaise.

Prawn Sandwich Ingredients
Prawn sandwiches feature responsibly farmed Atlantic cold water prawns. These are smaller (and therefore more sandwich-friendly) than the tropical warm water prawns that are notorious for irresponsible farming practices.
It wouldn’t be a prawn mayonnaise sandwich without mayonnaise. The mayonnaise is piped onto the bread in lines and the prawns are pressed on top.
Sometimes prawn sandwiches include salad, most often in the form of rocket. This is most common in the reduced fat variants.
The prawn sandwich invariably comes in the form of a traditional sandwich made with sliced bread, which is usually brown.

Prawn Sandwich Recipes
Making your own prawn sandwich is easy. Just cook your prawns (or buy pre-cooked prawns), add mayonnaise and mix together until the prawns are coated. Pile the mixture onto the bread and spread evenly. A leafy vegetable such as rocket, spinach or lettuce is an optional addition for added freshness.
To make it easier still, some supermarkets sell prawn mayonnaise ‘deli fillers’. These are pots of cooked prawns in mayonnaise that you can pile and spread onto your own bread.

In Popular Culture
Prawn sandwiches and those who eat them have a certain reputation, to put it politely. In 2000, the then Manchester United captain Roy Keane made the following comment on his team’s fans:
‘Away from home, our fans are fantastic. I’d call them the hardcore fans. But at home, they have a few drinks and probably the prawn sandwiches, and they don’t realise what’s going on out on the pitch.’
